The Quarry

After a recent family tragedy, a boy sets out to purchase a Christmas tree with the help of his big brother’s ex-girlfriend, Katie. Trying to ease his father’s mourning and hold what’s left of his family together, Katie and the boy search for a Christmas tree in their small town. Together, they try to reclaim a bit of Christmas and help each other deal with the aftermath of death. The Quarry is a coming-of-age story about young love and loss, set against the harsh winter wonderland of Northern Michigan.

The Quarry, with its beautifully muted tones and characters with visible and invisible imperfections, refuses to sink into the trap of nostalgia. Reading this felt like watching someone else’s dreams, equal parts unsettling, familiar, fragmented, hopeful, and filled with a mysterious beauty. I’ll never forget dreaming the dream of this book.”

“Salisbury and Luna capture every nuance of hope and tragedy in this beautifully illustrated graphic novel.”

“Ghost stories are a Christmas tradition, and “The Quarry,” like the very best of them, shows us the importance of seeking out and protecting the light in the darkest time of the year. The art is lovely, colored as if filtered through a frosted window. And the characters — and the snowy stage of Michigan — will linger with you long after you finish the final, heart-bruised page.”
